Since 1972, the Danilovgrad Art Colony has been bringing together renowned sculptors. The Colony provides financial support, sets the dates for symposiums, invites artists, preserves artworks, and organizes their presentation and promotion both domestically and internationally. From its earliest stages —specifically from its founding in 1972 as part of the Danilovgrad Cultural Center—the Art Colony quickly transcended local boundaries, assuming a republic-wide and federal character.
In 1974, the Colony welcomed its first international artists through the mediation of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts. For one year, it operated under the patronage of the “Mermer” factory in Danilovgrad. After that period, the Colony was returned to the Danilovgrad Cultural Center.
Thanks to its organizational strength and the quality of its work, it earned its highest recognition: inclusion in international institutions. For many years now, the Colony has hosted numerous foreign artists. On the basis of reciprocity, it also facilitates the participation of Montenegrin artists in international colonies.
The Danilovgrad Art Colony was a pioneer in fostering, producing, and exhibiting open-air sculpture, making it a unique and highly significant contributor to the development of visual arts in the region.
Today, Danilovgrad is one of the few cities in former Yugoslavia—and the only one in Montenegro—with an open-air gallery housing over one hundred sculptures of gallery and monumental scale. By the decision of its founders and Governing Board, as of July 1, 1999, the Danilovgrad Art Colony began operating as an independent institution, with the aim of reestablishing its place on the international cultural scene.
